Postcards are an affordable way to get your message out to the masses. Postcards do not require folding or an envelope, and they can be printed in a variety of sizes. Choosing the right size will allow your postcard to stand out from the rest in a unique way. For example, a standard postcard size is 5 inches long by 3 1/2 or 3.5 inches wide. They should not be wider or longer than 6 inches, however.

Postcards were first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1870. At that time, they were mostly plain, and printed by the post office. However, in 1894, picture postcards were introduced. These pictures were typically 4.75 x 3.5 inches, and were popular up until 1899. Then, in 1899, the US Postal Service introduced a standard postcard size. In 1906, the standard size was raised to 4 x 2 inches. In 1925, the maximum postcard size was increased to 5 x 7 inches.
Postcard sizes matter for several reasons. First, they affect certain elements of your postcard marketing campaign. Additionally, they affect the cost of mailing and printing. Postcards that are larger than the standard size will incur a higher postage charge.
